How to Get Pregnant? 4 Methods of Conception

When trying to conceive, the first method most couples try is intercourse. The male and female bodies match perfectly together during intercourse with the primary goal to place sperm near the cervix where it can swim to find the egg, fertilize the egg and thus achieve pregnancy. Intercourse works for many couples, but not all couples are lucky enough to conceive naturally. When intercourse fails, fertility experts have a few methods up the sleeve to increase the likelihood of conception.

Intercourse: No list of methods of conception would be complete without intercourse. From middle school health class, intercourse is the most well known answer for how to get pregnant, but it is not the final answer for some couples. For couples trying to conceive, intercourse should reach a male climax to increase the likelihood of conception, though pre-ejaculate may contain enough sperm to fertilize the egg.

IUI: Intra-uterine insemination is an alternative method of how to get pregnant. Sperm are collected from the male partner, typically via masturbation in a controlled setting, and deposited inside the uterus. They then have to travel a much shorter distance to reach the egg for fertilization.

AI: Artificial insemination is similar to IUI, but sperm are deposited inside the vagina rather than the uterus. AI is one of the most basic means of assisted reproductive therapy. AI can be used for women having trouble conceiving with a partner or women seeking to have children without a male partner. Sperm can be selected from a sperm bank or harvested from a partner or friend.

IVF: In-vitro fertilization refers to the process of fertilization outside of the female body (in-vitro). Eggs and sperm are collected in a controlled setting and both are placed in a lab dish. The sperm are allowed to penetrate the outer covering of the egg naturally, in some cases. If there is a medical issue with sperm health or ability to penetrate the egg, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used. ICSI simply means the sperm is injected directly into the egg. The egg is allowed to divide for several days before being placed into the uterus where doctors and patients hope implantation will occur.

Whether you want to know how to get pregnant naturally or how to get pregnant with a little help, there are various means of conception currently available today. Women (and men) have options- some require a male partner and others require sperm that can be chosen from a sperm bank.
